A month? Two months? She had lost track of time and as a result time had lost meaning entirely. She no longer rose with the hope that someone would visit, nor did she expect to get a phone call. Her days were packed with nothing but fillers; reading books, chatting with whomever was willing and escaping into that active imagination of hers. Really…what was there left to do?
Cascading locks of blonde hair fell around her expression curving to the gentle roundness of her face, the highlights of golden managed to bring out the bright hazel of her eyes. Perhaps in the sight of other patients that were not so collected she looked out of place, not meant to be in an asylum. Her complexion was nearly perfect say for the few freckles that adorned her cheeks and the wrinkles from laugh lines around her mouth. Laugh lines. Should that not have been telling enough to the doctors to release her? Did people with depression really have lines of laughter etched across their visage?
Bella sat upon the old table that supported itself with dying legs. The chairs were too unstable for her liking. From this position she could see down the rows of books to the right of the room and it appeared to be entirely empty. Light streamed in from the barred and dirty windows and through the tendrils of cascading radiance Bella could see small specks of dust all throughout the room. Disconcerting it was that this place could even for a moment be considered a hospital.
Sighing Arabella rose from her seat and began to wander the recesses of this strange and secluded place. The sound of her boots on the floor echoed in the abode providing eerie background noise to her investigation. A honey covered hand rose to the books and she caressed their backings feeling the dust and indentation of words along the brim. Their dark colors somehow managed to suit the library very nicely with its already creepy impression. Her eyes searched for a name that would jump out at here but as she continued along she noticed she had never read anything in this row before. That was slightly disappointing considering she had been coming here for a while…or at least she thought it had been a while.
Bella dropped her hand and went in search of the other isles caressing each one as if she could gather specific information from it that way. Her eyes travelled over each one appreciating the color, texture and even the year it had been bound. After another moment of searching she stopped and smiled revealing the pearly white row of teeth beneath her rose colored lips. She appraised it from afar as if distinguishing if this item was truly real then gingerly placed her fingertips along the surface.
Alice in Wonderland… She thought grasping the piece of literature in her hand and admiring the cover. The little white rabbit took of a small expanse of the front while a dark navy blue remained a backdrop for golden words. This had been a book she had read many a time in her childhood.
“I wonder why I never found you before…” She thought aloud addressing no one in particular but staring at the novel as if expecting it to reply.
Arabella’s eyes were fixated and it wasn’t long before her slender fingers opened to the first page. The words looked to be made by a type-writer leading her to presume that this was one of the first editions of the Alice in Wonderland books. As she began to read she was entirely unaware of the world around her and anyone who may have snuck in while she wasn’t paying attention.
